Here at SAMANTHA WILLS, we are jewellery specialists. We know stone compositions, mixing metals, layering and everything in between. What we don’t know about is make up. Our collective beauty bag consists of a half empty BB cream, some bronzer and a lip smacker circa 2009. So we brought in an expert on the topic, the beauty-savvy Gemma Watts (@gemkwatts). She graciously allowed our prying eyes into her bedroom to share a few of her tips for make up on the go, daily essentials, and her plan to resurrect a 90’s beauty trend. Bonus - she also showed us her impressive SAMANTHA WILLS collection!

Scenario: You sleep through all 5 of your alarms, and you have exactly 3 minutes to get dressed and out the door. What’s happening to your face?
A moisturising sunscreen first and foremost! Then a bit of YSL Touche Eclat under the eyes so I look awake, Glossier Boy Brow brushed up through the brows and some Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Skin Liquid Lighting on my cheekbones, brow bone and cupid’s bow to catch the light and hopefully diffuse it in a way that makes me look well rested. If I were having a bad skin day I’d swap out the sunscreen for a really fluid, sheer coverage tinted moisturiser with SPF- something like the LB Cream from The Base.
We have it on good authority that fermented rice products are the new ‘it’ beauty products. What is the weirdest thing you’ve used on your face?
I’ve heard that too! I think the weirdest thing I’ve used on my face is haemorrhoid cream as an eye cream- it worked for me! I also swear by Lansinoh nipple balm as a lip balm because it’s 100% lanolin, and all the best lip balms, in my opinion, have lanolin in them.
We can all share in the pain of having to pack for an overseas trip. What will you absolutely not travel without?
I’m a bit of a weird mix in that I love minimalism as much as I love excess, so I’m a pretty terrible packer. I think as long as you have a good pair of jeans, a white silk or cotton button down shirt and a longline blazer in black or navy, you’re pretty set. If I’m going on a long haul flight, I refuse to let my skin suffer so I turn it into a spa- sheet mask and all. You feel like an imbecile for the first 5 minutes but I can guarantee you the flight attendants have seen worse.
What is your favourite 90’s make up/hair trend that you want to see make a comeback? (Ours would definitely be sky-blue eyeshadow…)
I’d be game to try bright eyeshadow again too, but I spent 18 years dancing so I fear blues and greens will give me dance concert PTSD. I actually didn’t mind the dark brown lip liner trend, but I’d have to tone it down a bit to make it feel current.
If you are out for the night and only have room in your bag for your phone, credit card and one other thing, what are you packing?
This is genuinely me all the time because I always take a tiny little pouch out with me! I’m actually going to say bandaids. Even if you don’t need them yourself, if someone else needs one you’ll be the absolute hero of the night.
