We love discovering new creatives, and when we came across Cakes By Cliff on Instagram, we couldn't help but want to get married, just to have one of his cakes as part of our day!
This Sydney based professional & architect enthusiast started baking for friend's birthdays as a hobby, but has since found his passion by applying his architectural skills and background to cake making. We recently spoke with Clifford to get his tips on creating the perfect wedding cake.
What do you love the most about creating your cakes?
Behind the scenes there are a lot of emails sent back and forth between a customer and myself as we play around with design ideas for their cake. As you can see on my Instagram, sometimes I’ll even sketch up these ideas to give them a really clear indication of what it could look like especially for a wedding cake. So for me there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a customer’s face and hearing their reaction once they realise that their creation has been brought to life.
Do you work with many brides creating wedding cakes?
I started Cakes By Cliff around April 2015 so the wedding season was just finishing up. In the last few months though, I have been getting a lot of enquiries for wedding cakes - some I have had the pleasure of meeting up with in person for a one on one consultation.
What is your most popular cake for wedding days?
Most of my enquiries from the bride-to-be are for wedding cakes that are ‘different’ and ‘stand out’. They love the chocolate sails look that sits on top of the cake.
What is your number one tip for brides looking for the perfect wedding cake?
The number one tip that I can give to brides is to do your research. Pull out ideas from different magazines and blogs. Think about what colours, features and designs you’d love to see be brought to life. Even if you don’t think what you have in mind is do-able, write it all down and even mock up some little drawings yourself. Most importantly, ensure you connect with your baker on some level so that they share in your cake vision and aren’t just telling you what your wedding cake should look like.
