We love coming across emerging designers, especially when we feel so strongly about their creations! London native, bridal couture designer Moira Hughes is one; bringing her experience and knowledge of the European bridal couture market to Australia. Her gowns are designed with a modern, romantic aesthetic in mind, and are made for the bride to enjoy throughout her wedding day (even whilst dancing!). Moira, who's studio is based in Paddington, Sydney, works with brides throughout the country to create the perfect dress for them, using beautifully unique silks and laces not readily available in Australia. We recently spoke with her to gain an insight into how she became involved in bridal couture designing, and some tips she has picked up over the years.
What inspired you to get into designing, particularly in the bridal space?
I have always loved designing wedding gowns! We get to work with the very best fabrics from around the world and create a gown that a bride remembers forever. Designing and creating a wedding dress that allows a bride to feel the best she has ever looked is an amazing feeling. There is nothing like the thought of the bride taking those first steps down the aisle towards her husband in the perfect gown - unbeatable!
How do you gain inspiration for your collections?
Inspiration can come from the most unusual places and always works best when when its not over thought. I am a very visual person so seeing a beautiful lace could start a creation. My favourite is meeting a bride, seeing her figure and the silhouette we can create for her. The feel of the day and the rest of the styling adapt as the wedding develops and the gown comes to life over a series of fittings. The whole experience is once in a lifetime and having a dress that fits the body and personality perfectly is so important for our brides.
What is your number one tip for brides when coming to their first consultation with you?
My number one tip is to have a feel for the style of your wedding gown. Is it modern, traditional, romantic, classic, timeless? This will help you stay true to what you love and be open minded for ideas so amazing you may not have seen anything like it before! Also, make sure you feel good when you visit - wearing make-up, bringing heels, having your hair down. Whatever works for you!
You’re getting married very soon (congratulations, by the way!). What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of the planning process?
Thank you, thank you! I have a lot more understanding for brides balancing a day at work and planning a whole wedding! It really can be overwhelming with so many choices and opinions. Fortunately I have worked with the best in the industry for so long we are in great hands! I'm really choosing vendors who are fun to work with, who have the style you love, and who communicate well makes the experience enjoyable and allows you to relax knowing they will make sure your wedding is one to remember!
Tell us about some up and coming trends you foresee over the next 12 months in bridal couture.
Bridal couture is at a really exciting time in Australia! We have so much choice when it comes to incredible venues, allowing couples to have the opportunity to show their personalities throughout the day. We are certainly seeing this reflected in gowns, with Brides loving different shades & tones, especially with our new silhouettes featuring billowing top layers showing through to a more fitted layer underneath. They want a modern twist on the traditional styles, with unique backs being a real focus this year. Our new 2017 collection is in the making and features some exciting new twists!
