I recently checked in to the VENTANA INN & SPA – and I almost shed tears when I had to leave. This was my second visit to the hotel, and it is a must-do experience.
Big Sur, in & of itself is STUNNING. Like, these photos don’t do it justice at all, stunning! Add to that, the natural luxury of the Ventana Inn, and you will leave feeling beyond rejuvenated, calm & clear; I never understood when people said stuff like that – but trust me on this one – it is some kind of magic.
I recommend becoming a TABLET HOTELS Plus member. It will cost you under $200 a year & allow you to then choose hotels, that will upgrade you complimentary upon arrival – at different times, Ventana is on that list. Our room had an open fire place, where they deliver wood to your door every morning. There are hammocks suspended throughout the resort amongst the trees, two Japanese hot baths that are open air, to soak beneath the stars – and one of my favorite features of the property – a clothing optional pool (that is heated year round). Be sure to get have your breakfast on the outdoor patio at the restaurant, you will feel like you are sitting on top of Jacks Beanstalk!
If you are looking for a luxe getaway to get back to nature (and incredibly romantic) then this is your place. As a guest, you can also enjoy complimentary wine & gourmet cheese on the property at sunset.
WHAT ELSE I RECOMMEND:
DINNER: Make sure to dine one night at the Post Ranch Inn. Most try to secure a late reservation – but I’ll tell you this for free – Have a light breakfast & early lunch that day & grab the 5:30pm booking, because the view from this restaurant with literally take your breath away. It is like you are perched on the side of the world. We got there at 5:15pm & it was like nothing I have ever seen before.
DRIVING: The drive is one of the most magical bits. If you are coming up from LA, take the Pacific Coast Hwy all the way (California 1). If you are renting a card and get your mitts on a convertible – do it. Be sure to plan your trip so you are driving in the day time – not only is the view not to be missed, but there are no street lights & the road can sometimes become a little bit like a goat track… So be sure to only do it in daylight (and you want to arrive to VENTANA by sunset (if for nothing but the wine and cheese! ;)
LUNCH ON THE GO: ON the way out, I recommend calling into BIG SUR BAKERY and grabbing a sandwich & coffee. There are a few little cafes on the Big Sur bends, so if the Bakery is not your thing, you can get breathtaking views in these cafes.
