ARTIST - CORINNE LEWIS
Late last year, I was incredible humbled to receive an email from australian artist, Corinne Lewis, asking if I would sit for her, so she could paint me for the Archibald Prize…. I had to re-read the email a few times to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. I loved the Archibald & have visited the exhibition many times, looking at beautiful portraits, one of my all time favorites is that of Vincent Fantauzzo’s beautiful work of Heath Ledger . – and Corinne wanted to paint me!?! To enter into the Archibald?!? I couldn't reply quick enough to tell her yes. Yes. Yes. Absolutley yes.
The Archibald Prize is Australia's most prestigious portraiture prize. If the artist’s work is hung (eg selected to move to the final exhibition – the Archibald), it is displayed at the beautiful, Art Gallery of New South Wales.
For my sitting, Corinne came to meet me at a holiday house I had rented with my boyfriend & some of our friends, in Byron Bay in early January this year. It was a beautifully hot, Australian day & I was honored to meet this incredibly talented australian artist, who is renowned for painting women, lace work & jewellery like you are looking at a photograph. In the lead up to our meeting, we had emailed reference imagery back & fourth that we liked & we decided to go with a peacock chair, lace dress & turquoise jewels – three elements that have become SW brand & style signatures & the latter two which Corinne is so well known for. So I created a turquoise couture piece especially for the sitting, which as you will see in the painting below, Corinne has painted in such reality that every link & stone is identical to the actual piece.
Corinne & I chatted like old friends, so sitting in front of her camera was comfortable & easy, and the beauty that her soul radiates is like sunshine – that is the best way I can describe it. She is one of those people that is so kind, and gentle that she makes anyone in her presence feel like you have both shared many cups of tea & late night chats together.
I am so excited to share Corinne’s incredible work with you, in the series of photos that shows the finished artwork, followed by a picture of our Byron Bay sitting & some progression shots of the artwork in Corinne’s studio, over the past few months, and my favorite; the final picture below of Corinne (looking beautiful in her SW jewellery!) with the framed artwork.
I feel so, so, so blessed to have sat for Corinne for this project. As I try (very badly!) to articulate to Corinne in emails, I truly have no words to explain how much this means & how honoured I am to be chosen by her.
To Corinne, you are truly incredible, hands of gold & a soul of sunshine.
With my humbled appreciation – SWx
